Model Management: You’re a model, dancer and performer. What came first and what takes most of your time?
Rubia Stri: I’ve danced my whole life and around the age of 18 I started working at a dancers and artists agency. We were very busy with shows and rehearsals, so at first I was modeling only as a hobby. Since a year ago I am a fulltime model, I mainly do commercial assignments and artistic nude projects. I travel a lot and it’s a busy life, so dancing is now on the background because I’m not often in Belgium anymore.

MM: How and when did you get your first job as a model?
RS: One of my friends in high school told me to inscribe in a small local agency in our hometown. After I did that, I did some commercial photo shootings and catwalks for shops, brands and photographers. I was only 17, so that would be 6 years ago. About 4 years ago, an art nude photographer asked me to model or one of his projects, I gave it a try, I found out that loved it and I was blown away by the results!

MM: What do you want to transmit through your modeling pictures?
RS: Posing nude allowed me to really discover my femininity and to love my body. It changed the way I see the world as a young woman. I see my modeling as a way of expressing purity, freedom and confidence, which for me should be key values for everyone. When you look at my pictures you will maybe like what you see, or maybe not, but more important I hope you can see the confidence and independence I wanted to express when making the shot.

MM: Some people don’t understand the real meaning of artistic nude photography. Could you explain it to our readers?
RS: The nude body has been an inspiration for the greatest artists of all times, it has been portrayed since decades and can be found in every art museum. The human body itself is a work of art, it is pure and beautiful and expresses life, energy and emotions.
Too often we are told that every image of a naked body is sexual and should be hidden. Maybe this quote from Michelangelo, back in 1504, can clarify it more:
“What spirit is so empty and blind, that it cannot recognize the fact that the foot is more noble than the shoe, and skin more beautiful than the garment with which it is clothed?”

MM: One of the photographers, who successfully worked with you in the past, told us that you had a very good and conservative education. Can you confirm that and specify how it was?
RS: I went to a private, Christian school, led by holy sisters. We had to wear a uniform and go to church. After that I went 5 years to university and graduated as an Emergency care nurse/paramedic. My parents valued a good education, with respect and politeness towards everyone and compassion for the people around me. I am grateful for this, yet I also realize how important it is to stimulate children and young people to develop their own opinion and to question everything. I see too much people following the crowd, without thinking for themselves, without passion for what they do.

MM: How do you feel about artistic nude photography? Is this what you enjoy the most? Did all the photographers you worked with act professionally and kept the necessary distance? Is there any difference for you or the photographer if you are posing nude, seminude or in any fashion outfit?
RS: Artistic nude photography is for me the most amazing and touching art form. I really enjoy being part of it.
When someone wants to book me for an art nude project I always ask for all the details. I look carefully into the assignment and if I don’t have a good feeling about it or if the artist’s work doesn’t appeal to me, then I don’t take the booking. Because of all my research I hardly had any bad experience.
I am very relaxed about nudity so I don’t behave differently when shooting dressed or undressed. Art nude photographers are in general also relaxed and respectful with nude models on set and I rarely have awkward situations. If I am working for a commercial campaign is the product (clothes, accessories, jewelry) what has to be highlighted. In an art nude project I usually have to express feelings or create figures with only my body, that makes the posing completely different.

MM: What would you tell to all those people that don’t accept artistic nude photography?
RS: There are indeed a lot of people who judge me or denigrate me for posing nude. Sometimes I would like to ask them why do they find my body so offensive or why it should be hidden, they are missing a lot of beautiful and pure art in their lives.
I would recommend to all those people to chase their dreams and to do more of what they love, whatever that might be, just like I do. To me that’s more important than to follow the path that others consider best for me. I am able to do my passion for living, every single day. Being an art nude model allows me to travel, to meet the greatest art photographers on this planet and more important, to meet interesting and inspiring people all over the world. I consider myself a very lucky girl, because this is what I love to do and I’ve made it my job.

MM: How did you overcome the obstacles you found in the modeling industry and become the successful model you are nowadays?
RS: Because of the prejudices, very soon I had to be honest with myself and I had to decide what I really want. To be a successful model, whether it is nude or not, like every model, I have to work hard, do constant networking and give myself fully for every project I do. I have to take good care of myself and my body and convince people at every casting. Nothing has been given to me for free. People like working with me because I am calm and easy-going, yet very motivated to accomplish each assignment’s goals. Luckily, there are a lot of amazing people out there who make great art nude, have art galleries and expositions or publish their own art nude books and magazines. Connecting and being discovered by them helped me to get more exposure.

MM: You’ve been performing in all kinds of events, dancing in the best clubs and modeling around the world. How is a day in Rubia’s life?
RS: My day normally starts difficult; I am not a morning person. I need a loud alarm, my dog and some coffee. That is the only certain thing. As I am always traveling there is no structure of a normal Rubia-day. Sometimes I have two art projects in one day, other days I have a long commercial booking, some weekends I have shows with my dancing squad. I love the irregular life. Every day I do a workout and walk my dog. On free days I love to cuddle with my dog and my man at home or to go to the spa and wellness to give my body a treat.

MM: Recently you’ve been booked through Modelmanagement.com. How was the experience? Would you accept other bookings through this modeling community?
RS: My first booking through Modelmanagement.com was a great experience. We had a lot of fun on set and I’ve met an amazing team in Barcelona.
I like the international approach of Modelmanagement.com and will be happy to accept more bookings. I think the concept of the website is genius and very helpful as a freelance model. Modelmanagament.com secures the payment and helps to prevent misunderstandings. Also I’ve found the staff members very helpful and concerned about my well-being on the booking.

MM: You are present in most social networks and have your own website. How did social media help you in your model career? Is it difficult to show photos of your artistic nude work on social media?
RS: I have a hate-love relationship with social media. I love them because using them I am able to connect with people all over the world and to show my art and my portfolio to my followers. Social media help me to receive bookings and to be discovered by people who are casting for projects and assignments. Sadly, on most of the social media I have to censor my pictures. It is difficult and regularly Facebook or Instagram block my accounts or delete certain posts. Some pictures are just mutilated if I censor them, the art is completely gone if I have to add black bars or squares. I understand that we have to ban certain nudity and erotic from social media. My pictures, though, have nothing to do with this kind of imagery and are not offending or defamatory to anyone. When I see all the horrifying videos of animal slaughter and human abusive behavior freely shared and uncensored on our social media I really wonder where the logic in nudity-censorship is.

MM: Any future plans you can share with us?
RS: The following months I am working in Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain and France. I am currently looking for some good agencies that can represent me in the biggest cities of Europe, America and Asia for commercial assignments to combine with nude art projects. Also in the near future I will have to decide where do I want to live, I would like a warm climate but I’m hesitating between living surrounded by great nature or in an energetic and inspiring city, all tips about amazing places are welcome!
